Clocks

Detail of the skeleton clock, c. 1850

Marking time at Towneley – The Furniture Collection includes many types of clock. There is even one called a skeleton clock, can you guess why? Some date from the 1600s, other were made in Burnley including a longcase clock made by Robert Davis around 1735.

The collection includes a ticket clock, which is an early type of digital clock.

Did you spot a clock on the front of the Hall? It’s called a turret clock. The mechanism was made in 1820 by clockmaker Henry Blakeborough of Burnley, and its bell dates back to 1641!
