Alice, Lady O’Hagan, a member of the Towneley family, sponsored the work of archaeologist Professor John Garstang in Egypt. In return she acquired a substantial number of Egyptology artefacts from him.
A complete collection of ancient Egyptian relics were later gifted to Towneley Hall from O’Hagan’s private collection and exhibited in the Hall’s opening year, 1903.
The Hall is now home to more than 400 ancient Egyptian objects, including mirrors, necklaces and storage vessels, as well as sacred ritual items linked to death and the afterlife. Towneley Hall also cares for the mummified remains of a young man who lived 2,400 years ago, during the Ptolemaic dynasty.
