the books of remembrance

A Roll of Honour is a record of those that died during a time of conflict.

We have several Rolls of Honour in the collection at Towneley Hall, some are carved in marble and others are framed manuscripts. Often Rolls of Honour serve to remember those who were connected to a particular place, such as a church, school, or place of work.

The Rolls of Honour which you can browse here endeavour to record the names of every person from Burnley that died during the First and Second World Wars.

They are arranged alphabetically to help people find the name of a particular person. The Roll of Honour for the Second World War includes the person’s name and regiment, whilst the Roll for the First World War also lists the person’s service number.
