Sam’s friends wrote his obituary notice: “Departed this life through the effects of gas poisoning received whilst on active service in the Great War. Yes Sam, war is always a curse.”

Sam died in December 1919 and his medals were sent to his mum a month later. His medals were given to Towneley Hall museum and the curator immediately thought, because of their pristine condition, they had never been handled.
