Richard was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry in 1918.

He was one of many to die of pneumonia.

His parents received a letter of condolence from his Belgian fiancee, Adolphine Dubois (Richard had never mentioned her): “we loved each other with a sincere love… and now all I have as consolation is his dear photograph that I look at without ceasing… I can’t believe that he that I loved with all the power of my soul will never return.”
