John joined the Black Watch, as his small book shows, in 1899 but he was 16 years old, not 18.

He re-joined the regiment 5th August and was posted missing 16th September, 1914, later presumed killed.

John never saw Dorothy, his fourth child, as she was born in February 1915. He is commemorated on La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial in France, and on the Cross Bank Wesleyan Chapel memorial, which is now in Towneley Hall.
