James was awarded the Order of the Golden Palm by Belgium after the conflict. This was in recognition of the dedicated service to Belgian refugees who came to Burnley in the war.

In addition, James was involved in printing and horticultural businesses and was largely responsible for developing what became Interflora after the war.

His son, John, died of illness on active service in 1915.
