Before the war, James had worked at Bank Hall colliery.

James was killed in action at Polygon Wood, 26 September, 1917. The fighting there claimed the lives of over 1500 British soldiers in eight days.

James is buried in a war graves cemetery in Belgium. The statue stands in Burnley Cemetery and was erected as a private memorial.
