Ted was born in Stoney Street and educated at Burnley Grammar School. The family moved to Cliviger where they ran the Queen Hotel.

Ted joined the Royal Army Medical Corps having volunteered with others from Cliviger.

The photograph, showing Ted tending an injured German soldier, was taken at the front 30th July, 1916.
