Isobel was the medical officer at the Burnley Union Workhouse Infirmary from 1903 to 1908.
When war broke out, she went to Serbia with an all-female medical unit. She later served at Valetta Military Hospital in Malta with the Royal Army Medical Corps. She died there in 1917 of “congestion of the brain” and was buried in Pieta military cemetery.
She is commemorated on St. Andrew’s Church war memorial, Burnley, “as one of our dear boys who gave their lives’, and in York Minster as one of the “Medical Women who gave their lives in the Great War.”
