100 Stories > Harry Hartley Howarth (1897-1918)

Harry Hartley Howarth enlisted on 7th August 1914, serving with the Royal Field Artillery as a Bombardier. He was a son of a widow, Mrs. Howarth,  of 24 Cuerdale Street in Briercliffe.

He had only two leave terms during his three years in France. He was a strong athlete,  holding two medals won in France for cross-country running. With less than a month of the war remaining, he was killed on 14th October 2018, aged 21.

I have died for the dear homeland
The land of the brave and free
Always remember that, dear mother,
When’er you think of me.

When this sad war is over
And the others come marching home
And you think of your fallen hero,
Who will never more return.

Just look upon them, dear mother,
Though the tears may dim your eyes,
Remember your son was a soldier, too,
And not afraid to die.
