100 Stories > George Isherwood (1897-1971)

Soldiers carried Bibles and prayer books with them in the war. There are many stories of these stopping a bullet and saving a life. George tore pages from his Bible and used them as cigarette papers for his tobacco. George was wounded in 1917 causing him to have his left leg amputated.
Wounds, both physical and mental, were very much part of the war but led to improvements in medical science.
