100 Stories > Charles Midgley (1894-1915)

Charles lived with his parents at 23 Duke Street, Briercliffe. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in November 1914. After initial training he left England on board the Royal Edward troopship arriving in Egypt 10th August, 1915. The ship was torpedoed at sea three days later, on its way to the Dardanelles, by the German submarine UB-14 with the loss of 38 local men, including Charles.
His sweetheart was said to be an actress with the D’Oyly Carte theatre group from London and a lock of her hair, photographs of the two sweethearts and hand written note remain in a private collection.
