James Bailey, former foreman gardener at Queen’s Park, served in the Army, spending two years in the Balkans.

During this time he produced a book of sketches, many of them humorously portraying aspects of Army life in caricature with appropriate captions. They are in the style of Bruce Bairnsfather, the famous Great War illustrator.

The sketch book is in the Towneley Hall collection.
