The battalion was formed in September 1914 but did not serve overseas until 1917. During 1917-1918, the battalion suffered nearly 300 casualties killed, almost one in five of whom were from Burnley.

The number of men killed from Burnley jumped dramatically over the course the war. More than 100 died in 1914, rising to over 1,000 in 1918.
