Consultation on Towneley Traffic Calming 

Speed control on the roads in Towneley came out as a high priority when we consulted the public on the Towneley Masterplan.

There is currently a 20mph speed limit and a traffic survey (Aug – Oct 2025) identified average speeds of 26mph, with 15% of vehicles exceeding 30mph and recorded vehicle speeds of up to 78 mph.

The survey also recorded that 22,000 vehicles per week drive through Towneley Park, equivalent to 1.4 million per year.

Traffic Calming Proposals

To control speed and reduce the number of vehicles using the park as a shortcut, the Council is considering installing speed humps at 100m intervals on the road through Towneley Park. Click to see the plan. Please see a plan of the proposed improvements.

The humps will be marked with white triangles but there will be no additional lighting or signage. At points where footpaths cross the road there will be raised footway crossovers.

Because the Towneley is a listed historic landscape, the number and size of traffic signs and road markings will be kept to a minimum.
