Azraa Motala – Unapologetic

This banner is a reproduction of one of a group of portraits created by Preston-born artist, Azraa Motala. The original paintings are currently on display at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery as part of the British Textile Biennial.

As a descendant of two generations of Lancashire mill workers, Azraa invited other British South Asian women living in the North West, aged between 18-30, to be painted wearing clothes of their own choosing. These powerful images consider identity, power and belonging for an often overlooked community of young women who share similar heritages and cultures.

Unapologetic is a co-commission with The British Textile Biennial and The Harris, Preston.

Towneley Hall is now open to the public.

During our period of closure staff have been busy working on essential maintenance to the hall, ensuring its place in Burnley’s history for another 600 years. Currently this means the Great Hall is closed whilst we undertake surveys and repairs to the Grade I listed ceiling.

Thank you for your support.

Hand sanitizer, one way system, social distancing, mask wearing and the NHS track and trace app will all be in use to keep visitors safe.
