Harold was born in Burnley where his family was connected to the engineers Butterworth & Dickinson. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. He is pictured alongside his sisters Margaret (on left) and Frida, and his brother William.
Vanessa Godfrey (nee Butterworth) writes: “he kept a diary which reveal the horror, the attempts at normality, the unbalanced class structure, with occasional humour.”
A family story relates that as his mother was walking down the footpath to buy extra food for his homecoming the telegram boy came up the path.
